MARS N/SL-1

In designing the N/SL-1, MARS intended not just to design a sidearm to supplement the firepower of infantry, but a tool that could be carried by all personnel and be useful in more than a firefight.

The SL-1 has three power settings, each of a different intensity and focus. “Stun” greatly defocuses the beam and maximizes power output, resulting in a very loud and very bright, but otherwise harmless, flash of light. The Stun setting is designed to briefly incapacitate targets without causing permanent damage, though rare cases have been reported of the flash inducing seizures in sensitive targets.

“Full” maximizes both the focal length and power output, imparting a 40 kilowatt blast in less than a quarter of a second that can burn through 8mm of durnium under ideal conditions. Although the SL-1 is only half as powerful as the L-2 at full power, its output proportionate to its size makes it an ideal weapon for close-quarters combat.

The “Cut” setting focuses the laser at approximately 20 cm and moderates the power flow for a steady, continuous beam. By adjusting the weapon’s distance to its target, the user can cut, weld, and burn a variety of materials. While the instantaneous power output of the cutting beam is considerably lower than “Full”, the continuous draw on the capacitor can drain it in less than 30 seconds.

Because the SL-1 is carried by all Navy personnel, and even some police forces, MARS offers attachable iron sights for use without a helmet or visor, though they maintain that a heads-up display is necessary for proper handling.

The versatility and power of the SL-1 has made it a favorite among Rangers. In fact, many engineers and CQC teams have even abandoned the L-2 entirely, as the SL-1 better suits their needs regardless of the situation. If the L-2 is the backbone of the Ranger Corps, the SL-1 is its right hand.
